A Sampler of Books by Constance Reid

"Constance Reid, the foremost mathematical biographer of our time, has written a remarkable book, her best and most compelling yet. A writer of skill and intelligence, she could make even dull subjects interesting; given Bell to sink her teeth into, she has produced a dazzling piece of work." College Mathematics Journal

Talks at UPS

E. T. Bell In Washington
Mathematics and Computer Science Seminar
Wednesday, November 6, 4 P.M., Thompson 124

Long before he became celebrated for his best selling MEN OF MATHEMATICS, Bell spent 14 years (1912-1926) on the faculty at the University of Washington (plus the year 1907-1908, when he took a very strange master's degree there). These were years of great change in higher education in the State. They were also important years in Bell's mathematical career, more important really than his later, and longer, tenure at Caltech. Those who think of him merely as the author of MEN OF MATHEMATICS will be surprised by Bell the mathematician.

The Pulitzer Prize Play "Proof" - in Real Life
Thompson Hall Science and Mathematics Seminar
Thursday, November 7, 4 P.M., Thompson 126

Following the solution of David Hilbert's tenth problem in 1970, Julia Robinson became the first woman mathematician to be elected to the National Academy of Sciences and the first woman to serve as president of the American Mathematical Society. The strategy pursued to solve "H10" and the roles of all the participants will be simply explained, followed by a "sampler" of work to date on a new film "Julia Robinson and the Solution of Hilbert's Tenth Problem" by George Csicsery ("N Is a Number").
