Program Page

The Annual Meeting of the Pacific Northwest Section of the Mathematical Association of America will be held Friday and Saturday, April 1 and 2, 2005 on the campus of the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington.  On Friday, there will be Project NExT sessions in the morning and minicourses in the afternoon.  In the evening, there will be a general interest lecture by Keith Devlin and a welcoming reception for all in attendance.  Saturday will feature plenary talks by each of the invited speakers and contributed paper sessions.  There will be opportunities for socializing at lunch and a dinner banquet.  See the program page for full abstracts.

Update (March 24):  There is now a version of the program for the meeting available in electronic form.  There will be a printed copy of this in your registration packet, so it is not necessary to print it out.  Schedules for contributed talks are now FINAL.  [Schedule Grids only]

Update (March 28):  Project NExT Dinner on Friday night is now at Katie Downs, not Engine House 9 as printed in the program.

Update (March 31):  Keith Devlin profiled in front-page article in The Tacoma News Tribune.

Update (April 14):  A photo album from the meeting is now available.

Invited Speakers

See the program page for abstracts of talks.

Minicourses (Friday Afternoon, 2:45 PM - 5:15 PM)

See the program page for minicourse descriptions.  Note that these will run concurrently, so you can only attend one minicourse.

Registration

Please download the registration form, print it, and mail it with your check before the March 14 postmark deadline for late registration (which has now passed) takes effect.  [Registration Form]

MAA members will pay $55 for registration, lunch and dinner.  Students are $10 with meals included, free if giving a talk.  Here are the various fees and discounts.  Include all that apply to you.  Even though student meals are zero cost,  registration forms should clearly indicate their choices.  All meals should be ordered on the registration form before the March 14 postmark deadline.  There will only be a limited number of meals for sale on the day of registration.   Guests may order meals only, without paying a registration fee.  See the program page for details on meal choices.

Contributed Talks

On Saturday there will be several sessions of 15 minute contributed papers.  See the program page for themes of these sessions.  Titles and brief abstracts (300 words maximum) for all sessions should be submitted in plain text or simple TeX/LaTeX (i.e. not word processor formats like Word) by email to Nancy Neudauer. You must include the title, your name, affiliation, and technology needs (overhead projector, computer, blackboard).  The deadline for contributed papers was 1 March, and has now passed.

(Update: March 28)  Thompson 124, 126 and 130 are equipped with Macintosh's.   Thompson 228 and 322 are equipped with PC's.  All machines have CD drives, Zip 250 drives, USB ports and fast internet connections.  Software includes Acrobat Reader, Powerpoint, web browser, Word, Excel.

If these setups do not have the right software or connectivity, each room is equipped with cables to hookup a notebook computer to the projection systems, so you should show your presentation using your own equipment.  Display resolution should not exceed 1024x768 so plan the format of your presentation accordingly.  Newer Mac laptops may require a special adapter to hook into the video cable.

We suggest you have both a primary and secondary method for conveying your presentation into our setups to avoid unnecessary delays or outright failures.

Student Activities

Students are strongly encouraged to attend this meeting and we ask faculty to bring students, including those who might be ready to give a talk at a future meeting.  We would especially like to encourage student presentations on summer research, REUs, senior projects, the modeling contest, and other projects.  Work presented need not be original research. Titles and abstracts can be submitted as with other contributed papers by 1 March.

There will be a problem solving session for students shortly after lunch.

Please contact the student program coordinator, Curtis Feist, for more details of student activities and arrangements.

Two-Year College Activities

Faculty from two-year colleges are invited to attend this meeting. Please contact the two-year program coordinator, Jennifer Laveglia, for details of activities or if you have an idea for a talk, a panel, or if you would like to become involved in another way.  At this time, there is a session planned, titled "Innovation in College Algebra/Precalculus."

Getting There (Arrival Information)

Meeting activities will take place primarily in Thompson Hall (#3 on campus map) and the Wheelock Student Center (#22 on campus map). Directions for arriving by car, plane, train or bus are available.  For those using MapQuest or the like, 1500 North Warner, Tacoma, WA, 98416 is the best address to use for locating UPS.

Arrivals

Project NExT, 8:00 AM Friday Morning, Wheelock Student Center (#22), Board Room (Ground Floor, NE Corner).  Park in the lot near Wheelock Sudent Center (directions below).

Minicourses, 2:45 PM Friday Afternoon, Thompson Hall (#3), Room 120 (Linear Algebra) or Room  318 (Combinatorics).  Park in the lot just south of Thompson (directions below).

Joint UPS-MAA Presentation and Reception, 8:00 PM Friday Evening, Kilworth Chapel (#7).  Park in the vicinity of the chapel (directions below).

Saturday Morning Registration, 8:00 - 9:00 AM, Wheelock Student Center (#22), Main Lobby.  The lot just south of Wheelock is close to registration and the concluding banquet, while the lot near Thompson is very close to the remainder of the day's activities.

Saturday Evening Banquet, 5:45 PM, Wheelock Student Center (#22), Marshal Hall.  The lot just south of Wheelock is adjacent to Marshall Hall which consumes the entire southern portion of the building.

Campus Parking Locations

There is no need to obtain any sort of parking passes - just make sure you park in marked slots and not disabled or carpool locations.

Kilworth Chapel (#7).  Traveling on Union Avenue, turn east onto N 18th Street to see the chapel on your right.  Please help us maintain good relations with the neighborhood and do not park in the adjacent residential areas.  Park on the south side of N 18th Street, in the small lot just east of the chapel, or on Union Avenue just south of N 18th.  We will also sign the route through campus from the NE corner of the Thompson Hall lot (described below).

Wheelock Student Center (#22).  There is a lot just south of the building, bounded by N. 13th and N. 14th on the south and north, and Lawrence Street and Alder Street on the west and east.  It is easiest to find if you travel N 11th Street to locate its intersection with Lawrence Street and then go north on Lawrence, which will dead-end with the lot on your right.  There is an entrance from Alder, but it is harder to find.

Thompson Hall (#3).  Just south of Thompson Hall there is a large parking lot.  Thompson Hall currently has a large construction crane in front of it - just follow your way towards the crane once it is in sight.  If you are traveling north on Union Avenue, you will see the crane dead-ahead long before you get there.   Once on Union Avenue, and having passed the football stadium, the entrance to the lot is on the east side of the street, just opposite N 14th and some of the fraternity houses.  (Note, as you travel northward on Union, the streets go S. 7th, 6th, N 7th, there are no streets numbered 1-5, south or north!)

Other Suggestions:

Local Eateries

Some suggestions for lunch or dinner that are nearby are provided by the UPS web site. Or consult the Tacoma Weekly's more comprehensive list. The Engine House #9 is close to campus with pub food, a historic location, and a wide selection of beer, some of which is brewed next door. More scenic is Katie Downs with good pizza and good beer right on the waterfront along Ruston Way. Gateway to India is close by, and caters to vegetarians (more info on the lists referenced above).
